Janelle Monae-esque Styling (Take 1)

Add caption

So far this has to be my favorite picture of how I am able to wear my hair naturally. I used to be ashamed of my texture of hair and always wear it in a ponytail and not take risks as far as styling. I had put this picture up as my facebook profile picture and one of my friends wanted to know how I accomplished the look. Its pretty simple as long as your hair cooperates.

The first thing I did was detangle my hair in the fashion that Mop Top Maven ( Detangling Tutorial) does it. I split my hair into four and locked the hair with large two-strand twists. I then spritz it with a conditioner/water mix and worked that in. After working each section, I  made sure to twist them again. Next, work shampoo into each section, massaging scalp. Twist hair once again and wash out. After,  use some styling products that can enhance your curl. I used Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine which was used to limit the frizz of my hair, Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie which is heavenly, and lastly Vakita Coconut Oil to lock in the moisture.

And Voila!!! You are ready to be styled...

Just let your Soul Glooooo....LOL

It is a lot easier to do your hair when it is damp opposed to when its completely dry (at least for me it is). The first step is to gather hair on the back of the neck and start twisting it. In a wringing a towel out motion, twist hair and tack down with a pin. Continue to use pins as you twist so that your roll can stay in place.

Continue this motion until you have majority of your hair at the top of your head. When you have the hair at the crown of the head, decide which side you want to have a "puff bang" on. I opted for a side sweep going to the left.

I definitely have to try this look out again. The first try came out so well and I guess the way it looked that night cannot be identically duplicated. I will try at it again and back it up with pictures. I hope you guys will take a risk with your natural hair as well.
